Dental Implants: Restore Your Smile with Confidence
What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium post surgically placed in the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root. Over time, it naturally fuses with the bone through a process called osseointegration. Once healed, your dentist places a crown, bridge, or denture on top to restore both function and aesthetics.
Each dental implant consists of three parts:
- Implant – the titanium post placed in the bone
- Abutment – a connector between the implant and crown
- Crown – the visible replacement tooth
Your oral surgeon will place the implant; your general dentist will place the abutment and final restoration.
Benefits of Dental Implants
- Durability – Designed to last for decades or even a lifetime with proper care
- Natural Appearance – Mimics the look and feel of natural teeth
- Jawbone Preservation – Helps prevent bone loss where teeth are missing
- Improved Function – No slipping or shifting like dentures
- Comfort – Feels like your own teeth without removable parts
Types of Dental Implants
Endosteal Implants
The most commonly used type, these are surgically placed directly into the jawbone and support one or more prosthetic teeth.
Immediate Implants
These are placed immediately after a tooth extraction, helping to preserve bone and shorten the overall treatment time. Your surgeon will assess whether you’re a candidate.
All-on-X Implants
A full-arch restoration that uses four to six strategically placed implants to support a fixed denture—an excellent solution for patients missing all teeth in one arch.

The Dental Implant Process
1. Consultation & Planning
- Complete evaluation including 3D imaging
- Assessment of bone health and implant options
- Bone grafting will be discussed if needed
- Treatment planning tailored to your needs
Typical treatment timeline: 6–12 months from extraction to final crown
2. Implant Placement Surgery
- If the tooth is being removed first, a bone graft (socket preservation) may be placed at that time to maintain bone volume
- Implants are placed with local anesthesia (sedation is available if needed).
- Healing phase: 3–6 months for integration before restoring. At the end of the healing phase you will see your surgeon for a final check to ensure the implant has integrated with your bone and is ready for your dentist to begin the restoration process. A healing abutment will be placed at this time if it was not done at the time of surgery.
3. Abutment & Crown Placement
- Once the implant has integrated the abutment is attached
- A custom crown, bridge, or denture is then fabricated and placed
- These steps are completed by your general dentist
Caring for Your Dental Implants
Daily Hygiene: Brush and floss thoroughly
Dental Visits: Regular cleanings and exams help prevent complications
Avoid Harmful Habits: Refrain from smoking, biting hard objects, or excessive alcohol use
