Dental Extractions: What You Need to Know

Comfortable, Safe Tooth Removal When Needed

At times, removing a tooth is the best step toward restoring your overall oral health. Whether due to decay, infection, crowding, or trauma, dental extractions are a routine procedure performed with care, comfort, and precision at our office.

When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary?

You may need a dental extraction if you have:

  • Severe tooth decay that cannot be restored
  • Advanced gum disease causing tooth loosening
  • A fractured tooth beyond repair
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Teeth blocking orthodontic treatment
  • Infected or abscessed teeth not responding to root canal therapy

Types of Dental Extractions

Simple Extraction

The tooth is gently loosened and removed using specialized instruments under local anesthesia.

Surgical Extraction

This may involve a small incision in the gum and sectioning the tooth with a handpiece for easier removal.

What to Expect During the Procedure

  • Comfort First: Local anesthesia is used to completely numb the area. Sedation options may be available for anxious patients. We offer same day sedations, just ask the front desk when you call to schedule if you are interested.
  • Quick & Efficient: Most extractions take 15-30 minutes
  • Post-Op Instructions: You’ll receive detailed guidance on caring for the area after the procedure.

Recovery & Aftercare

To ensure proper healing, follow these tips:

Control Swelling: Use ice packs for the first 24 hours
Rest: Take it easy the day of surgery
Soft Foods Only: Eat cool, soft foods for the first few days
Oral Hygiene: Avoid brushing near the site for 24 hours, then resume gentle cleaning
Avoid: Smoking, drinking through straws, or vigorous rinsing for at least 72 hours to prevent     dry socket

Replacing an Extracted Tooth

If the extracted tooth is not a wisdom tooth, it’s important to consider replacement options to maintain proper bite alignment and prevent bone loss. We offer:

  • Dental Implants
  • Bridges
  • Partial Dentures

Your doctor will review the best options for your situation.
